Discover and explore with us the exciting world of Julie and Her Wolves

Julie and her wolves were first introduced to young readers with the publication of
Julie of the Wolves, winner of the 1973 Newbery
Medal. Regarded by children as one of the most popular Newbery Medal winners, this novel is
considered a modern children's
classic. In 1994, Jean Craighead George published Julie, the sequel to Julie of the Wolves.
Young readers were thrilled to be reunited with this young heroine of the Arctic as they
shared in her desperate fight to save her beloved wolves. In 1997, the twenty-fifth
anniversary of Julie of the Wolves, Jean Craighead George has given children the gift
of a third book, Julie's Wolf Pack, which returns
readers to the tundra, where the story continues -- all told from the wolves' point of view.
We hope teachers and students will join us in this tribute to Julie and her wolves, and to
Jean Craighead George, the writer who gave them life. For each of the three books you will find
general discussion questions and suggestions for reaching across the curriculum: math, science, language arts,
music, and social studies.
The themes and connections offered in this
guide give students the opportunity to think about issues such as survival, cultural pride and communication
that Jean Craighead George has so skillfully interrelated in these three novels. Through discussion and further
study, students will discover that "good
literature" stretches the mind in all directions.
Feel free to print this teacher's guide for use in the classroom.
