Leaps in Language

One-and-a-half-year-olds are great mimics. They imitate the way adults talk, and the way they use everyday things. They love to explore, climb, dance, and spin around. Language blossoms at this age, and toddlers love repeating new words and phrases. Books with rhythm and music encourage toddlers to practice their language skills.

Tips for Reading to a one-and-a-half-year-old:

  • Choose a book with plenty of repetition or a common refrain to allow your child to chime in.
  • Lap reading is always fun, but some independent toddlers may want to sit beside you on the couch.
  • Recite favorite picture-book texts together when your child is in the high chair or tub and make a game out of it.
  • Ask your toddler to choose the book at story time.
  • Encourage other family members to read to your child.

Harper Growing Tree books for one-and-a-half-year-olds:

  • My Aunt Came Back is a popular chant filled with fun-to-say, exotic-sounding words. Colorful artwork celebrates the loving relationship between aunt and niece.
  • My First Songs offers parent and child ten easy-to-sing favorites. The winsome illustrations enhance the humor and spirit of the music.
  • Duck Song, an adaptation of the classic poem from The Wind in the Willows, humorously demonstrates the determination of ducklings who want to be like their parents.
  • Shoes features rollicking verse that is easy to memorize and repeat.
