Hello to "No!"

Curiosity and need for order guide two-year-olds, who are developing a sense of themselves. They are starting to assert their independence and to test boundaries "No!" is a favorite word. They will sometimes "read" to a stuffed animal. Books that show daily routine and how things work help two-year-olds understand their place in the world around them.

Tips for Reading to a two-year-old:

  • Choose books that have relevance to your child's experience.
  • Ask your child questions about the text; connect the events to his life.
  • Select books that show daily routine or how things work. They help a child make sense of the world.
  • Take books along wherever you go reading helps pass time when waiting, and it's always fun.
  • Encourage your child to pack books for trips to Grandma's or the doctor's office.
