Predictably Unpredictable

A developing sense of humor helps two-and-a-half-year-olds balance their need for both independence and security. They can be stubborn and difficult one minute and spontaneously affectionate and silly the next. They struggle to do things themselves but are always looking for encouragement. Books that feature reassuring, familiar adventures help build confidence.

Tips for Reading to a two-and-a-half-year-old:

  • Read to your child and her friends on play dates.
  • Encourage your toddler to "read" to you.
  • Ask your toddler to tell you the story of a favorite book when you are driving.
  • Offer a book to your child when she wants your attention and you are busy.
  • Choose books that feature predictable and humorous adventures.

Harper Growing Tree books for two-and-a-half-year-olds:

  • You Can't Catch Me captures the excitement of the game of chase, in which getting away is never as much fun as getting caught.
  • Chicken Little thinks the sky is falling, but smart toddlers know better and are endlessly entertained by this classic tale of silliness.
  • The Three Billy Goats Gruff tells the exciting but ultimately comforting tale of how the three billy goats outwit a clumsy troll.
  • The Three Bears, with its humorously predictable text, has long been a favorite of toddlers.
